2007/08 Building Cleanability Awards Judging Criteria

Buildings nominated for the 2007/08 Building Cleanability Awards will be visited and assessed against a range of external and internal criteria as follows:

1 Overall External Design Complexity of external design from a general perspective. Is it "cleaning friendly"?
2 Construction Materials Used How many different materials? Are they easy to clean?
3 Window Design Complexity of window design. Simple or complex window profile?
4 Cleaning Equipment - Provision of Fixed Equipment Are cradle rails provided? Any other equipment built in?
5 Accessibility to all Parts Can all external parts of the building be properly accessed for cleaning?
6 Safety Factors Have cleaning safety factors been properly taken into account? Are there any high risk factors?

7 Overall Internal Design Complexity of internal design from a general perspective. Is it "cleaning friendly"?
8 Internal Building Layout How complex is each floor layout? What is the flexibility for change of use?
9 Wall Surfaces Used Are they easily cleaned and durable?
10 Ceiling Surfaces Used Can they be easily cleaned - if necessary by specialists?
11 Carpet Flooring Materials Used What colours are used? How durable is the quality of carpeting viz. a viz. volume of traffic?
12 Hard Flooring Materials Used Can they be cleaned properly? Are they of the appropriate material for the volume of traffic?
13 Density of Building Usage How many people occupy each floor?
14 Cleaning Equipment - Provision of Fixed Equipment Are there any special items of equipment designed into the building to facilitate cleaning of all internal parts?
15 Cleaning Equipment & Material Storage and availability of Power Supply Sockets Are there cleaning equipment and material storage facilities on every floor? Are these fitted out properly? Are there a sufficient number of power points for cleaning equipment?
16 Accessibility to All Parts Can all internal parts of the building be properly accessed for cleaning?
17 Toilet Layout and Equipment Provided Can they cope with the volume of usage? Are surfaces easily cleanable? Is all necessary functional equipment provided?
18 Stairs and Escalators Can any stairs or escalators be properly accessed? Are stair wells "cleaner friendly"?
19 Vending and Catering Areas Are any areas used for vending or catering properly designed for easy cleaning?
20 Air Conditioning Equipment (if applicable) Can all air conditioning or extraction ducting be adequately accessed for periodic cleaning?
21 Waste Management Equipment and Procedures How easy is it to remove waste from each floor? What happens to it at the "back end" of the building?
22 Safety Factors Have cleaning safety factors been properly taken into account? Are there any high risk factors?
