2009/2010 Building Cleanability Awards History and Background

The Building Cleanability Awards scheme was conceived by The Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners in 1994, with a view to highlighting the relationship between building design and cleaning effectiveness.

A pilot scheme was held in 1995/1996 within the City of London and, following nomination of eleven buildings, three buildings received a Building Cleanability Award and a further three were Commended, at a Court Luncheon Presentation.

The second scheme was held in 1997/1998 and involved buildings in the Greater London area. Thirty buildings were nominated by twelve different cleaning contractors and twenty nine entries received four or five star Cleanability Awards, at a Luncheon Presentation held at the RAC Club in London.

A third scheme was held in 1999/2000 and again covered the Greater London area and out to beyond the M25. Twenty one buildings were nominated by ten different cleaning contractors and covered eight separate categories. An Awards Presentation Luncheon was held at The Millennium Dome in June 2000, attended by over 100 guests.

The first major Awards scheme, covering England, Wales and Scotland was introduced in October 2001, having secured British Cleaning Council funding for two further schemes in 2001/2002 and 2003/2004. Forty five building nominations were received from sixteen different nominating companies and the Awards Presentation Luncheon was held at Guildhall, London in July 2002, attended by over 200 guests.

The 2003/2004 Awards scheme received fifty four building nominations and an Awards Presentation Luncheon was again held at Guildhall, London in July 2004, attended by over 320 guests.

The 2005/2006 Awards scheme continued to build on the successes of the three London and two UK schemes previously undertaken and attracted a total of eighty nine building nominations from throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Awards Presentation Luncheon was held at The Brewery in London and was attended by 425 guests.

The 2007/2008 Awards – the seventh Awards scheme – again received core funding from The British Cleaning Council, as Awards Patron and attracted a further seventy five building nominations from thirty two different nominating companies. Over 400 guests attended the Presentation Luncheon at Guildhall, London in June 2008.
